What is Folliculitis?
Folliculitis on legs is the inflammation of hair follicles as a result of bacterial infection of the damaged hair follicle. It can occur on any part of your body that is covered by hair, but commonly appears on the face, neck, scalp, chest, back and thighs. It is a skin condition common in teens but can affect people of all age groups. More than 10 to 20% of people may experience this condition in their lifetime. People of color may be prone to experience folliculitis due to the growth pattern of naturally curly hair. Blue Water Spa uses specific lasers to safely perform laser hair removal for dark skin including black and brown skin complexions.

What are Common Folliculitis Causes?
Folliculitis is caused by bacterial infection of the damaged hair follicles. Often, hair follicles get injured while shaving or from wearing tight clothes, blockage of follicles, and bacterial infection. Folliculitis is one of two types, superficial and deep. The most common form of superficial folliculitis is called Barber’s itch and is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. These are seen in the beard area and often on the upper lip. In this case, a long pulsed and yag laser should be used to safely remove hair from darker skin tones without damaging the surface of the skin.

When inflammation progresses deeper into the tissues, it causes a dermal abscess. It is called Sycosis barbae (vulgaris) when it occurs on the face and furuncle, or boils, when it occurs in other parts of our body.
Folliculitis often appears as a small, red, pus-filled bump with hair trapped in the center. These lesions are often painful, swollen and itchy. Once the ingrown hairs are removed by means of laser hair removal at Blue Water Spa, the issue should be resolved.
For individuals who have had scarring due to folliculitis, laser hair removal with the VBeam laser in Raleigh can be used to remove redness in scars. Other medical grade skin care modalities at Blue Water Spa, including microneedling, can be used to soften and eliminate scarring.
What is Microneedling?
Your family physician or dermatologist may prescribe antibiotics such as dicloxacillin, ciprofloxacin, or cephalexin as a first choice of treatment. If no satisfactory results are obtained, antibiotics such as Clindamycin, Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole, Minocycline or Linezolid may be recommended. In treatment-resistant and recurrent cases, mupirocin ointment is recommended. These medications can certainly help inflamed skin. To fully eliminate folliculitis, laser hair removal is the most effective and predictable solution.
